May 10, 2025 was a sunny spring day and a large crowd showed up to hear local author, historian, lecturer and psychic medium Rev. Tim Shaw talk about Mourning in the 1800's. Visitors then attended the wake for 9 month old Jacob Diehl which was held in the 1845 era farmhouse. We'd like to thank Tim and all the fantastic volunteers who made this event such success, and to the people who attended.

Using Goats to Clear Brush

In days gone by, caretakers at Concordia kept livestock which helped clear away vegetation and weeds and kept the grounds tidy. Recently we invited some 4-legged lawn mowers to come to the cemetery to graze and clear away brush and their favorite delicacy — poison ivy. Goats can maneuver around delicate headstones without causing damage.

Vanished Cemeteries of WNY

On Saturday, September 28, 2024, volunteer researchers at Historic Concordia Cemetery took a look at the Vanished Cemeteries of WNY. In 1879, William Hodge reported on the history of local cemeteries of which 12 were within the city limits. Today there are only 4 including Historic Concordia Cemetery. What happened to them and those interred within their grounds?

Veteran’s Day Commemoration

Veteran’s Day Commemoration is held every year Concordia to honor the veterans interred on our historic grounds. Originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I, Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

The Story of Concordia. Once a showplace and pride of the community, the cemetery was abandon in 2001 and left to fall into ruins, with no maintenance and no care, the stories of the past forgotten. Today, a committed team of volunteers takes care of the cemetery and safeguards its history.

We are here to revive Concordia’s past and bring back to life all the history that time tried to forget…
